Shaul Ilan - Passed away June 12 2009
Shaul was one of our great master's competitors at Valley Health and Fitness. Shaul maintained amazing year round condition and was walking proof that a healthy, active lifestyle can make one ageless. Shaul often competed against bodybuilders up to 30 years younger than he was, and beat them.

In the masters division, his overall condition was highly competitive and he enjoyed great success. Shaul was an outstanding ambassador not only for Valley Health and Fitness but for the bodybuilding community and for active and healthy living.

Marilyn Shane "Muscle Momma" Wins 1st
June 2nd, 2007 Marilyn Shane puts the word power in empowerment. Last weekend at the Western Naturals Bodybuilding Fitness and Figure Competition in Nanaimo, the 50-year-old single mother of two placed first in the masters and heavy weight category. She then beat out all female competition, taking home top overall prize.

It was only Shane's fourth competition. "It was a big goal of mine to do it at this age. I just wanted to do one more at 50," said the enthusiastic Shane. "I not only did it, which I'm really grateful for, but I won it." Shane's bodybuilding career started just three years ago when she was working out with a friend on a treadmill and lamenting the drawbacks of age.

Shawnigan Lake Walk
On Sunday, May 15, several members from Valley Health and Fitness participated in the Shawnigan Lake 22km walk around the lake. This event was a friendly, non-competitive fundraiser for the Cowichan caregiver society. Although the morning was wet at the start time of 8:30 a.m., the sun made its appearance, and it was a gorgeous day to enjoy both the lake and mountain vistas.

Bodybuilding rivalry
On Aug 20, 2005, A friendly rivalry between two Valley bodybuilding figures competitors keeps both of them on their toes. Kim Stefanski, 32, and Charlene Akhurst, 32, finished one-two in the figure tall division during the provincial bodybuilding championships in Surrey. Stefanski also placed first overall for figures. "It's awesome for Kim and I,'' said Akhurst. "We seem to be bumping into each other on stage.'' "I think we're both very competitive. When you care about the other person and have a friendship, it puts it on a different level.'' Akhurst said it was a very difficult competition, with seven in the category. "Last year was my first year. I did two shows last year and carried on this year.''
